This is the same place as in the previous photo, 11 years later.
You can see not only the profusion of new shops (many didnt' seem to last long) but the more colorful signs and all the cars. On the far right, just on the edge of the frame you can see a newstand. Just to the left, out of the picture, is a Japanese restaurant. The contrast between the rather dull day in the previous shot and the bright sun of this one wasn't intentional, but seems fitting.
