fortune teller and anthropologist

Fortune-teller and anthropologist, Ulaanbaatar, July 1999.

Outside of Gandan monastery, to the east, there's a whole row of fortune-tellers along the street of the ger district. A friend and I stopped at one of them, and this is my friend - Dave, also an anthropologist - having his fortune told. The man consulted a book in Tibetan, although I doubt he actually could read it. I don't quite recall the question that was asked, nor the answer. While I also can't recall for sure - and my notes don't say - I have the impression he decided where to consult in his book by using coins. This is a common fortune-telling method, as is the use of anklebones from sheep.
