The general area is also known as Bayanzag (which just means rich in zag or saxaul). There's a saxaul 'forest' a short distance away. The Flaming Cliffs are so named for their color and the way they appear to blaze, especially at sunset. They are mostly famous as the spot where Roy Chapman Andrews (an inspiration for Indiana Jones!) first discovered fossil dinosaur eggs in 1924.
