wild horses

Tah' (takhi) - wild horses.

Tah' (takhi) is the Mongolian name for what is better known elsewhere as "Przewalski's horse". The horses are native to Mongolia, but became extinct in the wild in the late 1960s. They were reintroduced in the early 1990s, in a place called Hustai Nuruu, a national park about 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) west(ish) from Ulaanbaatar. We were quite lucky to see a group (a bachelor group, I was informed) so close to the road. My friend and I had gone expecting at best to see the horses on some far hill, but we were fortunate. The links page has a link to the Hustai Nuruu homepage, where you can learn more about the Przewalski's horse and the reintroduction project.
